If you’re looking for an excellent natural place to go, we’ve got one for you. Hogg’s Falls is one of the nicest of Ontario waterfalls that’s easily accessible. Not large, but just enough to enjoy the power of nature.
What’s cool about it is that there’s a Hoggs Falls Trail that you can check out as well.
We love to get off the beaten path often. If you’re reading this, you’re most likely also looking for ways to get away from the city landscape.
You also want to get away from the big conservation areas near Toronto that are jam-packed in the summer and on weekends year-round. Luckily Hogg’s Falls is about an hour and a half north of the GTA via sideroads.

Exploring Hogg’s Falls
It’s not a large waterfall, but its serene setting off the beaten path makes it a little gem of a destination. We’ve visited it several times on our day trips as it’s just a sweet spot to stretch your legs and get a quick dose of nature.
Located at the extreme south end of the Beaver Valley in Grey County near Flesherton, Ontario, it’s about 7 metres high and is part of the Boyne River system.
Just as the Hoggs Falls is not a large waterfall, the Hogg’s Falls Trail is not overly long. A
The falls were named after William Hogg, a member of a Scottish family that lived in the Don River Valley and Yonge Street area of Toronto in the mid-19th century. Hogg’s Hollow in this part of Toronto is also named after them.
The best vantage point to view the falls is from the clearing off the Hogg’s Falls trail. Although you can make your way down to the river, it’s a bit elevated.
On its own, Hogg’s Falls isn’t a long stop. You can check it out, take a few photos and then be on your way. The Lower Valley Road, which gets you to the falls is a beautiful, winding road, especially during the fall period. It leads to other areas of the Beaver Valley which are just as stunning.
For Bruce Trail buffs, the main trail runs past Hogg’s Falls going northward.

Tips For Your Visit At Hogg’s Falls
Be prepared when you explore Hogg’s Falls. It’s not a long stop on your day tripping or road tripping through this part of Ontario, but there are things you can do to make it a pleasant experience.
- Be aware of mosquitoes and flies during the height of the summer season. They can be pretty bad around here at this time.
- The trail is easy, but if you’re planning on exploring the area at the base of the falls, wear appropriate footwear (hiking shoes/boots).
- There aren’t any places really to sit down and eat. This is literally a cool spot for a quick walk and a visit.
- Be careful during a stretch of rainy weather – the waterfall can be quite strong during this period.
- The parking lot is reasonably sized, and overall, it’s not a super popular spot. However, given the increase in daytrippers seeking out nature spots, it might get busy here in the middle of the day. So either an early morning visit or a supper-time visit is a good idea.
