Being prepared for all that life throws at you gives you a sense of confidence. You can take on the world and survive. Lately there’s been much talk about EDC, but what is Every Day Carry, and why should you always carry it with you?
What Is EDC?
Recently, I have been thinking about what EDC entails. It essentially is gadgets, instruments or devices that an individual carries with them every single day.
Carry your Every Day Carry to work, around the house or anywhere you go. Place your Every Day Carry items in a knapsack or messenger bag to easily transport them.
Many people use EDC for travel, outdoor activities such as day hikes, road trips or even long commutes to work and back home. Every Day Carry is a guy’s thing. The ladies are well ahead of the guys in being prepared, with their essentials stored in purses!
The point of EDC is preparedness to handle issues that arise. You are like MacGyver but better.

What to Carry in Your Every Day Carry?
From surfing some EDC websites and checking out what people are posting on Pinterest, most people carry the following or combinations of these items:
- Knife
- LED Flashlight
- Multitool(s)
- Watch
- Match or Lighter
- Pens
As I use public transportation to get to work, I am always wondering, what do commuters carry in their EDC? Is it becoming more popular in Canada?
Although I carry a few essentials, I would also add some emergency items such as Bandaids, a protein bar, sunglasses, and a comfortable pair of shoes for walking. So if you have to walk a distance to get somewhere (like many did during the power outage in 2003 in Eastern US and Canada), you have essentials to make it to your end destinations.
